Football: Holiday weekend has feast for fans

Ten football matches over Queen's Birthday weekend should be enough to satisfy even the keenest Dunedin fans, with games on all three days.

The highlight will obviously be the opening games in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup at Otago Stadium tomorrow.

However, one of the season's most important Football South Premier League matches will be played at Tahuna Park today, where two championship candidates - Dunedin Technical and Mosgiel - lock horns.

Only one competition point separates the teams, although Mosgiel has a game in hand, and coach Andrew Brook will want to retain that advantage, especially with no FPL games being played next weekend.

Top team Caversham plays University on Logan Park No 2, instead of at the Caledonian Ground, and the firepower at coach Tim Horner's command should ensure a result against Varsity.

The students might score a goal but are unlikely to produce the consistency over 90 minutes required for an upset.

Northern hosts Roslyn-Wakari at Forrester Park, which is like an away venue for both sides.

However, the fields have decent scale and surface for teams willing to try to play constructive football, and spectators who make the long trek could be entertained.

The women's premier league matches have been moved to today.

That competition has been expanded from four teams to to six, as teams from University and Technical have been added.

The senior Technical women's side leads the competition by nine points, and heads to Central Otago to play Queenstown.

The premier sides of Technical and Roslyn-Wakari play at Sunnyvale, as do the two University women's sides.

Monday brings Chatham Cup football with 2pm kick-offs to accommodate any extra time or penalty shootouts.

University plays Caversham at the Caledonian Ground, and in a repeat of last week, Roslyn-Wakari plays Dunedin Technical at Ellis Park.

Mosgiel travels to play West End, and Mornington also heads for Timaru to play Northern Hearts.
