The man who nurtured the talents of Danny Vukovic and Mat Ryan is leaving Central Coast after nearly a decade as the A-League club's goalkeeping coach.
John Crawley has parted ways with the Mariners, paving the way for gloveman Matthew Nash to retire and take up the post for the 2015/16 season.
Crawley joined the Mariners as first-choice `keeper in 2005 before the inaugural A-League season but due to injury moved into a coaching role where he became renowned for his astute eye for up-and-coming shot-stoppers.
The 43-year-old's work with Socceroos `keeper Ryan during his time at Central Coast under former coach Graham Arnold earned plaudits, as did his role in developing his predecessor Vukovic into a sought-after star.
Crawley's acclaimed ability to foster potential between the sticks recently led to his inclusion in Aurelio Vidmar's coaching squad for the Olyroos' trip to Chinese Taipei for their AFC under-23 Championship qualifier win.
That sabbatical - his first official role with the Olyroos - could have opened the door for more opportunity with one of Australia's national teams, though a move to another A-League club is also a possibility.
Mariners coach Tony Walmsley praised Crawley as a professional operator.
"He's built his career at the Mariners and while Mathew Ryan will stand out as his greatest success, he will be fondly remembered by everyone," Walmsley said, adding it was important to replace him with the known and trusted Nash.
"I'm delighted that Nashy has taken the opportunity to move into a coaching role.
"He's been coaching elite `keepers for a long time and took on some work while JC was on international duty.
"The decision to retire from playing is not an easy one, but these opportunities are rare."
Nash will work with current Mariners `keeper Liam Reddy.
