Football: Major southern clashes in first round

There will be two all-Football South premier league clashes in the first round of the Chatham Cup.

New Zealand Football released the first round ties this week and the games are limited to regional fixtures.

They will be played on the weekend of May 14-15.

In the ties involving Dunedin teams, Roslyn-Wakari will take on Mosgiel, which looms as an exciting contest.

Both sides have been putting in some good performances in the premier league and it will be a good keen battle with neither team looking to have the favourite tag.

Caversham should go in as a heavy favourite against Northern in the other tie involving two teams from the premier league.

Caversham looms as the favourite to win the football premiership, although it should get a stern examination today, when it plays

Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park.

Dunedin Technical takes on Northern Hearts from Timaru in the first round of the Chatham Cup.

Gore Wanderers, which beat Melchester Rovers on Anzac Day in the preliminary stages, gets its reward by taking on Queens Park from Invercargill.

West End and Thistle will tangle in an all-South Canterbury affair.

Queenstown Rovers, which played in the Football South premiership until a couple of years ago, when it headed for the Southland league, will have some confidence when it takes on the young Green Island team at home.

Otago University should be too good for Mornington, while Grants Braes will be looking to win against Old Boys.

Running alongside the Chatham Cup is the women's knockout cup, where Glenfield Rovers AFC, of Auckland, is looking to gain its third victory in as many years.

It has a bye in the first round, as have a couple of other top sides.

In the South, New Zealand Football has amended the draw because of predicted high travel costs.

Originally, University - top of the premier league in Dunedin - was drawn to play Queenstown, which is top of the Southland women's competition.

But the winner of that game might have had to travel to Nelson for the second round, which would have been a large cost to a small club.

So New Zealand Football has changed the draw.

Northern will play Queenstown at the Caledonian Ground while University, Dunedin Technical and Roslyn-Wakari will have the bye.

The women's games will also be played on the weekend of May 14-15.
