Caversham maintained its perfect record in the Football South premier league with a 2-0 win over Dunedin Technical at Tonga Park on Saturday, to make it 12 wins from as many matches.

Just a week after an enthralling Chatham Cup tie between the two rivals, this was a very tight and occasionally dour affair with few good chances on goal on the sodden pitch, but goals to Andrew Ridden and Lewis Jackson were enough to claim the three points.

Technical actually started the better of the two sides, pressing up the pitch and dominating early possession but was unable to test Liam Little in goal.

Caversham slowly warmed into the match, but more than half an hour was played before there was a genuine chance on goal.

That came when Caversham defender Craig Ferguson whipped in a free kick from the left, which Ridden connected well with first time, only for Technical keeper Tom Batty to be relieved as it hit the post and bounced away.

Most of the action was taking place in the centre of the field as both sides struggled to use any width, and Technical centre backs Andrew Douglas and John Curwen were easily able to head away anything that was lifted their way.

Caversham finally managed to utilise some space three minutes before halftime, thanks to the craft of young winger Ryan Fleming.

He won the ball off Technical fullback Ross Howard before dribbling 20m towards the left corner.

He then squared a low cross for Ridden who placed a side-footed shot expertly between Batty and the left goalpost to take a one-goal lead into the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Caversham doubled its lead when Ridden launched a counterattack from deep in his own half by sending striker Jackson clear with a long pass.

Batty came screaming out of his box but was beaten to the ball by Jackson, who nonchalantly rolled the ball into the net from 35m out.

Technical tried to get into the game.

Midfielders Tom Petersen and Tim McLennan were busy and Howard was always a threat from set pieces, but by the time the final whistle blew, Caversham goalkeeper Little had barely been called on to make a save the entire match.

The win leaves Caversham 14 points ahead of Technical, and eight ahead of second-placed Mosgiel, which has played one more match than the leader and two more than Technical.

With only a third of the season remaining, Caversham has remarkably conceded just three goals.

Mosgiel solidified second place thanks to a 3-1 victory over a depleted Northern at a chilly Memorial Park.

Northern had a couple of early chances that it failed to capitalise on, and the home side took advantage when it opened the scoring with a well-struck Callum Flaws volley.

Mosgiel extended its lead in the second half with Rahan Ali chipping the goalkeeper for the second, and Connor Neil converting a penalty, before youngster George Gray got a consolation goal for Northern in the final minute on his premier league debut.

At Ellis Park, University was missing a raft of first team players due to the holidays and coach Darren Hart found himself in goal against Roslyn Wakari.

An impressive opening saw University race to a two-goal lead, thanks to goals from Thomas Eminson and Dave Mwangi. Roslyn pulled one back just before halftime through striker Tennessee Kinghorn to get it right back into the match.

The impressive Kinghorn struck again in the second half as Roslyn started to dominate, but it took an unfortunate own goal from University's Marc Matsas to seal a 3-2 win for Roslyn.

The university holidays continued to wreak havoc throughout the grades.

A couple of teams defaulted from the second-tier Fletcher Cup, and all women's and a couple of lower grade men's divisions had no games scheduled, due to the disruption.
