Dunedin Technical hung on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mosgiel in a Football South Premier League match on Saturday, but the two teams are only battling for second place as Caversham moved to within a single game of claiming the title.

At a sunny Memorial Park, both teams had early chances on goal in the opening 30 minutes.

Technical youngster George McCall had a shot deflected wide, and defender Andrew Douglas blasted a close-range shot over the bar from the resultant corner.

Technical striker Ash Watson, in only his second match for the side, looked lively in attack and hit the post with a snap shot.

At the other end, there were chances for Mosgiel striker Callum Flaws, who latched on to a long ball but struck his shot straight at Technical keeper Tom Batty, and later smashed a powerful shot over the bar after a clever flick-on from Regan Coldicott.

Technical eventually opened the scoring in the 35th minute, after Mosgiel captain Cam McPhail under-hit a back pass, and Watson pounced on the ball to coolly slot it past Mosgiel goalkeeper Liam Whittaker.

Tony Martin's side added a second five minutes later, after right winger Ross Howard swung in a deadly cross that was deflected towards goal by a Mosgiel defender.

The ball struck the inside of the post, and seemed to then bounce off Whittaker in goal before it was cleared, but the officials deemed the ball had, in fact, crossed the goal line.

The second half was largely one-way traffic.

Mosgiel dominated as it desperately tried to get back into the game.

It clawed a goal back in the 57th minute, when Coldicott beat the offside trap and rolled the ball past Batty.

Determined to hang on, Technical left only striker Alistair Rickerby isolated in attack.

An animated Martin hollered at his troops to tighten up as they kept 10 men back behind the ball, while Mosgiel controlling possession.

There was another moment of contention for the home side with 20 minutes remaining, when it had a goal disallowed after a great cross from the otherwise quiet Eder Franchini was tapped in by a team-mate who was adjudged to have come from an offside position.

Mosgiel continued to bombard Technical, but resolute defending ensured the visiting side took the three points, while Mosgiel coach Andy Brook was left to lament the two 50-50 calls that went against his side.

Caversham will only need to draw against Northern next weekend to effectively claim the league title, after a clinical 4-1 win over Roslyn Wakari at Ellis Park.

Although Roslyn started brightly, the champion-elect opened its account in the 27th minute when Michael Hogan scored, and fellow midfielder Jared Grove doubled the lead just before the break.

Roslyn got one back after an hour when the impressive Tennessee Kinghorn scored - only the fourth time the Caversham defence has been breached this season.

Lewis Jackson restored the two-goal buffer minutes later, before Andrew Ridden scored the visiting side's best goal with a neat chest volley.

Caversham is yet to drop a point this season and fittingly, can lift the trophy at its Tonga Park home this coming Saturday.

There will be no time to celebrate however, as it has a trip to Auckland the following weekend, to take on Waitakere City in the Chatham Cup quarterfinal.

At Sunnyvale, University beat Green Island 3-1, after leading 1-0 at half time.

In the women's premier league, Roslyn Wakari downed Technical Maroon 2-0 at De Carle Park, while the University Premier team put 14 goals past its B team.
