Golf: Croudis distances field in Wanaka tournament

Duncan Croudis (Otago) took up where he left off four years ago by shooting 6-under par for 36 holes to win the Wanaka tournament by five shots from his nearest rival on Saturday.

Croudis (22) won the same title in 2010, before taking up a golf scholarship at Iowa State University, so it rates as two in a row for the Balmacewen golfer.

His nearest amateur rival was James Anstiss (Otago) on 139 while Southland's Matt Tautari came in third with a 2-over tally for the two rounds.

Four club professionals showed their ability to score and their wide variety of shots as all four finished in the top seven.

Cody Harper (Invercargill) finished 2-under on 138, Craig Palmer (The Hills) shot 141 and Garth Domigan (Wanaka) and Ben Gallie (Millbrook) were tied on 142.

Croudis held the lead at the halfway stage despite starting his morning round with two bogeys.

He tidied the round up with birdies on the sixth, 11th, 13th and 15th holes and parred all of the other holes.

This gave him a one-shot lead over former Otago representative Simon Hollyer (Queenstown), who made an early statement with three birdies on the front nine.

Hollyer went 5-under with an eagle three on the 475m par-5 10th but he bogeyed the next two holes and made a double on the final hole to lose the initiative.

Anstiss, Brandon Hodgson (Otago) and Brent McEwan (St Clair) were in hot pursuit on 71 while Mark Brooks (Queenstown) finished 2-over on 72.

Otago No 1 McEwan was playing in his first trial after getting married and having a week-long honeymoon and admitted to being a little nervous, due to his lack of golf.

In the afternoon, it was all Croudis despite carding a bogey five on the first hole. Birdies on the third, fourth, fifth and eighth holes put him 3-under at the turn and he put the win beyond doubt with two birdies at the start of the back nine.

His only blemish coming home was a bogey five on the 369m par-4 17th.
