Golf: Town defeats Country

The Town women beat Country by a convincing margin in the annual fixture played in damp conditions at Balmacewen on Sunday.

Despite the 10-5 score, the contest was much closer than this indicated with eight of the matches finishing on the final green.

Town led 3-2 after the morning foursomes match but it could have been the reverse as slender margins decided the outcome.

The contest remained tight on the outward nine in the afternoon singles but the metropolitan golfers forged ahead in the final holes.

In the foursomes, Town's No 2 pairing Sally Shaw and Tracey Storer won comfortably on the 15th green and, in the singles Shaw, won 8 and 7 at the expense of Tapanui's Julie-Ann Kelly.

Playing at No 9, Tama Sasaki (Chisholm Park) posted the only other large win in beating Mary Thompson (Queenstown) in 13 holes.

The top pair of Susan Greig and Wanaka's Liz McRae had a close tussle. McRae scored close to par and won the 18th hole to take the honours.

Neither of these players is putting her name forward for selection this year citing work commitments and a lengthy trial series as the reason.
