Golf: Otago players in action ahead of team selection

On the eve of the naming of the first Otago men's golf team of the season, six of the top players have been competing in a Charles Tour event in Tauranga, while three other contenders have been playing in the Southland matchplay on the Otatara course in Invercargill.

The open event at Tauranga was won by New Zealand professional Mark Brown while Ryan Chisnall (Nelson) took amateur honours at 13 under par.

Queenstown's Jamie Anstiss was the top Otago contender at six under par with rounds of 67, 68, 70 and 69.

Anstiss, along with Brandon Hodgson (Otago) shared top honours in the first round on Thursday with a three-under-par first round of 67.

Hodgson went on to score 75, and two rounds of 71 to finish four over par for the four rounds.

Nicholas Borren (Otago) was the second-best of the Otago golfers with consistent rounds of 70, 71 and 70.

Borren saved his best until last with a final round of three under par 67 to elevate himself to two under par for the four rounds.

The cut for the final two rounds was set at the top 60 golfers and ties on 144.

Duncan Croudis (Otago) missed the cut by one shot while Daniel Barnett (Queenstown) and Cromwell junior Inia Logan finished on 147 and 151 respectively.

In Invercargill, both Mark Brooks and Kayne Wardell (both Queenstown) bowed out of the southern matchplay event in the early rounds.

The selectors will today name the top 10 senior players, six under-21 players and eight masters (over-40) golfers to compete in the triangular tournament against Aorangi and Southland at Cromwell next weekend.
