Golf: McEwan to lead strong Otago side

Greg Johnson, the convener of the men's selection panel, has named one of the strongest Otago teams for many years.

The 10-man team will join the masters (over-40) and under-21 teams to compete in the triangular tournament against Aorangi and Southland in Cromwell this weekend.

After winning the final two trial tournaments, Brent McEwan (St Clair) retains the No 1 berth and will captain the team.

James Anstiss, Mark Brooks (both Queenstown) and Nicholas Borren (Otago) all played in the national interprovincial at North Shore last year and have retained a place in the top five.

Duncan Croudis (Otago), at No 3, is the only newcomer after completing his golf scholarship at Iowa State University earlier this year.

Brandon Hodgson (Otago) played in the interprovincial at Balmacewen in 2012 and will play at No 6 this weekend, while Sean Masters (Otago) will be keen to improve on his seventh ranking.

The under-21 team is extremely strong, headed by three players who were in contention for senior honours.

Kayne Wardell will be the No 1, while Ryan Bellamy (Port Chalmers) is at No 2 after winning the Cromwell tournament.

Inia Logan (Cromwell) began the trial series in style, winning at Roxburgh, and he will be at No 3 this year.

After the triangular, the Lakes championships at Arrowtown and the Otago matchplay championships at Balmacewen, the selectors will name eight players to compete in the South Island interprovincial at Russley in November.

In reality, 10 players could still be in contention as Anstiss and Masters have university examinations on the Saturday and so two others will have to play.

Immediately after the South Island team event, six players will be chosen for the SBS Invitational at Otatara in Invercargill in mid-November.

The final six for the New Zealand interprovincial at Hamilton in December will then be chosen.
