The Otago men's and under-21 teams were convincing winners in the triangular tournament which was held in cold and windy conditions in Cromwell during the weekend.

But Otago failed to dominate the entire fixture and finished in last place in the tight masters (over-40) event, which was won by Aorangi.

The Otago senior team set the pace in chilly conditions on Saturday afternoon, winning nine of the 10 matches, four over Southland and all five at the expense of Aorangi.

Otago's top player, Brent McEwan, was the only player to lose, going down to Karl Mariu (Southland) on the final green.

McEwan turned 1-down, won the 10th with a birdie but lost the next two holes to trail by two.

The margin oscillated over the homeward nine but McEwan went to the final hole one behind and lost the match by two after scoring a bogey 5. Otago players posted some good winning margins and only one other match finished on the 18th green.

Brandon Hodgson (No6) lost the first five holes but, with a spirited fightback, won six of the last 13 holes to clinch the win.

Otago finished with 17 games out of a maximum of 20 and the selectors gained little to make any serious changes to the order of the next team.

The senior players will have three other chances to impress. The next is at Arrowtown next Saturday, the second at the pennant finals and the third at the Otago matchplay championships at Balmacewen during Labour Weekend.

The masters team finished third but with one or two additional wins could have featured better.

Paul Adams celebrated his 50th year playing representative golf for Southland in style playing at No4 in the masters team.

He holed out with a driver for an ace on the 206m par 3 third hole while playing his son-in-law Jeremy Morgan (Otago). Adams went on to beat Morgan on the 17th green.

The Otago under-21 team won 10.5 out of 12 games which augurs well for the future.
