Before a rare win four years ago, the Otago club men's pennant team had not won the provincial senior A pennant title since 1994, but it was far too strong on the Lower Waitaki course in Oamaru yesterday.
The Balmacewen golfers dominated the contest, beating North Otago 5.5-0.5 and claiming four wins against a strong Queenstown sextet with one match halved.
Balmacewen had been a dominant force when it won the title in 1991, 1993 and 1994 and yesterday's win could be the start of a new era.
For Otago, Daniel Elder, Jason Hughes and Luke Murdoch had two wins while Nick Borren and James Anstiss emerged unbeaten with a win and a half each.
For Queenstown, Wakatipu schoolboy Sungwoo Han had two wins while Simon Hollyer emerged unbeaten with two halves.
North Otago greenkeeper and top Otago masters (over-40) golfer Gary Creedy was the only Oamaru golfer to feature, halving with Hollyer in the morning and Borren in the afternoon.
In a dominant display, Otago won nine of the possible 12 games while Queenstown had one win and six games to finish second.
The event became a triangular contest when South Otago failed to front up with a team for the final.
