Golf: Otago conquers South Island

The Otago men's golf team ended a four-year drought, winning the South Island interprovincial teams tournament on the Russley course in Christchurch during the weekend.

Otago beat Aorangi 6.5 to 1.5 and Southland in a close tussle by 4.5 to 3.5 in hot and dry conditions on Saturday.

Canterbury looked to be the favourite with two big wins on Saturday amassing 14.5 games while Otago trailed with two wins and 11 games.

But yesterday the forty-strong field was faced with some unplayable conditions with 70km/hr winds.

Balls rolled off the slick greens and drives were at times uncontrollable and scoring became a lottery at times.

But the Otago golfers responded well, beating Canterbury by 6 to 2 and Tasman by 5.5 to 2.5 to gain four points and 22.5 games.

Canterbury finished in second place while SBS host Southland came in third.

Only three golfers emerged with four wins, which included New Zealand representative Vaughan McCall (Southland) and Otago's Nick Borren (No 4) and Otago No 8 Daniel Barnett.

Scott Hellier (Southland) was unbeaten with three wins and a half while Otago reserve Ryan Bellamy had a win and a half on debut on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, Otago led Aorangi by a narrow margin at the turn but forged ahead on the homeward nine posting three wins and a half at lunch.

Borren, Daniel Elder and Barnett all won their matches while Duncan Croudis won the last two holes with a par and birdie to clinch the half.

In the afternoon, Brent McEwan (No 1), Brandon Hodgson and Bellamy pushed home the advantage for a convincing win.

Against Southland it was a much closer contest with Otago's 2.5 to 1.5 lead at lunch proving crucial as both teams notched two wins in the afternoon.

Yesterday, Otago led Tasman by 3 to 1 at lunch and narrowly won the afternoon match total.

But the top performance came against Canterbury with Otago golfers showing true grit in the conditions for the 6 to 2 win.

Lydia Ko finished in outright third, five shots behind winner Inbee Park, of South Korea, at the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship last night.

Despite firing a final round 66, Ko could not regain ground lost when she fired a disappointing 71 in the third round on Saturday. She finished on 271, three shots behind Stacey Lewis, of the United States in second and one clear of fourth placed Azahara Munoz, of Spain.

Danny Lee finished tied for 13th in the PGA Tour's CIMB Classic which finished in Kuala Lumpur last night. Lee's final round 69 saw him finish on 279, eight shots behind winner Ryan Moore, of the United States.
