Golf: Freyberg team unbeaten on second day of event

Otago was unbeaten on the second day of competition in the Freyberg Masters (over 40) men's tournament being played at Waitangi this week.

Otago beat Poverty Bay-East Coast by 3 to 2 in the morning and drew with a strong Waikato quintet 2 each in the afternoon.

This gives Otago a win, a draw and a loss after four rounds, as the team had a bye in the second round on Monday afternoon.

Queenstown's Simon Boland had a memorable day at No 1, winning both of his matches.

In the morning he beat Dougal Watts by 4 and 2 after making a great start, winning four of the first five holes.

He turned 3-up and parred the homeward nine, giving Watts no opportunity to get back into the game.

In the afternoon, he won the final hole to beat Waikato's Phil Hunter on the final green.

Boland started strongly with birdies on the first, fourth and sixth holes, but three bogeys left him one light at the turn.

He won the 11th, birdied the 16th and parred the final hole to win 2-up.

At No 2, Stephen Hitchcox beat Simon Jeune by 4 and 3 in the morning, turning 4-up and posting birdies at 12, 14 and 15 to finish the match.

But in the afternoon, Waikato's Greg Bell was too strong, beating Hitchcox with two holes to spare.

Oamaru greenkeeper Gary Creedy lost to Poverty Bay's John Wyllie in the morning on the final green.

Creedy had another tight match in the afternoon and looked set to win on the final hole until Waikato's Wybo Veldman sank a 3m putt on the final green to clinch the half.

Otago No 4 Jeremy Morgan had a mixed day, beating Bay's Bruce Yates by 3 and 2 in the morning but going down to Waikato's Ken Shea in the afternoon.

In the morning, Morgan made a strong start to be 3-up after four holes and four ahead at the turn.

Morgan made a birdie two on the 16th to finish the match.

Kyle Geary, at No 5, lost to Tene Goldsmith on the 17th green in the morning but finished the day in style in the afternoon.

Geary's putting blitz gave Waikato's Andrew McGibbon a golf lesson, Geary winning 6 and 4.

Geary made birdies at six, eight, 10, 11, 12 and 14 to destroy his opponent.

Geary needed a meagre 19 putts on 14 greens, which were putting true, to post his impressive winning margin.
