Golf: Golden opportunity for caddies

Organisers hope a chance to learn from one of the best will help fill the remaining caddy spots at the New Zealand Open.

About 270 caddies are needed for the tournament, starting at The Hills and Millbrook on Thursday, and there are about 20 places open.

This year is particularly special for aspiring caddies as they have the opportunity to receive some tips from Steve Williams, who caddied for Tiger Woods and Adam Scott.

Williams is hosting a clinic tomorrow for all tournament caddies, and will stay on to caddy for an amateur during the first two rounds of the open pro-am.

''This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those wanting to pursue a caddying career,'' caddy master Andrew Whiley said.

Whiley said most caddies at the open received an average payment of $60 a day - and usually received some extra golf balls - but the benefits were broader than that.

''Caddies do receive payment depending on how well the player plays, and if the pro makes the cut. However, it's really about the taking part and being involved in the play.

''This is such an amazing opportunity for budding golfers or golf nuts to get up close and personal with some of the world's best golfers and, of course, celebrities, walking the courses inside the ropes.''

Caddies will need to register online (www.bmwnzopen.com/caddies) or at The Hills driving range no later than 10am tomorrow.
