Golf: Mueck hoping his caddy can keep his mind on the job

Kristopher Mueck is worried his caddy will get a little distracted today.

Mueck (25) is one of the most in-form golfers in the New Zealand Open field, having tied for second at the New Zealand PGA a week ago and tied for third at the Victorian PGA last month.

He has been paired in the Open pro-am with former Black Caps batsman-turned-television personality Mark Richardson and expects to hear plenty of banter about the World Cup.

There will also be a chance for his caddy, close friend and cricket nut Sam Baker, to watch some great cricketers on the course.

''Sam loves Shane Warne. He's a massive Warnie fan.

''He's quite a loud character as well, so he'll fit in nicely.''

Mueck, who hails from the Victorian city of Bendigo, has been billeted this week with a couple at Millbrook.

He has done moderately well in the last couple of tournaments in Arrowtown but is hoping a hot run of form will translate into greater success this year.

Last week, he fired a course-record 64 in the first round of the PGA at Remuera before finishing three shots behind compatriot Matthew Millar.

''I thought I was a big chance but didn't play quite as well as I would have liked down the stretch,'' Mueck said.

''When you're at the top end of the leaderboard, you'd prefer to have a No 1 next to your name. Second and third aren't bad but I would like to go one better this week.''

Mueck- it is pronounced Myew-ick - has conditional status on the PGA China Tour and longs for a chance to compete in America.

Before that, he and the dozens of other talented young Australians in Arrowtown get another chance to spoil the New Zealand Open party.

''There's a bit of rivalry there. Plenty of the Kiwis come over to Australia and beat us so it's good to return the favour.''
