Golf: Bateman surprise Kiwi contender

Harry Bateman is the surprise contender among the battling Kiwi contingent at the New Zealand Open in Queenstown.

Bateman is 6-under-par today through 15 holes and is at 10-under for the tournament.

Josh Geary started with a birdie blitz and is the best of the other New Zealanders at 9-under.

Australian golfer Jordan Zunic has opened with an eagle and a birdie and shares the lead at 12-under with overnight leader David Bransdon.

Leading New Zealand hope Ryan Fox carded a 69 today but, at 6-under for the tournament, has too much ground to make up.

Arrowtown has turned on a glorious day and The Hills course is swarming with fans.
