Golf: All six teams still in running for pennant title

As the round robin section of the men's metropolitan senior A pennant series nears an end, all six teams remain in the running to win the town title and go forward to the provincial final.

The unbeaten St Clair team will certainly have a home final after beating Otago Gold in all six matches on its Corstorphine course on Saturday.

St Clair has 20 points and 33.5 games while Otago Blue is in second place with 13 points and 23 games.

Otago Blue should finish second after beating Island Park 4 2 at Balmacewen on Saturday but the defending champion cannot be complacent.

The top Balmacewen team is yet to play St Clair at St Clair and Island Park on the Waldronville course.

The remaining four teams are all in a good position to finish third and gain a place in the semifinal.

Taieri, Otago Gold and Chisholm Park all have nine points with two rounds to go while newcomer Island Park has seven points with a game in hand after its Waldronville course was flooded a week ago.

St Clair had little trouble with Otago Gold although Ryan Bellamy and Michael Ormandy beat Harry Smith and Peter Lamb respectively on the final green.

Playing at home this time, Taieri exacted some revenge on Chisholm Park after losing the away game a week ago.

The 5-1 winning margin has lifted the Mosgiel golfers up to third place with nine points and 22 games.

For Chisholm Park, Conor Jamison was the only winner, beating Taieri No1 Mark Andrews with two holes to spare.

Ken Shaw (No4) and Elliot Hornbrook (No5) gave Taieri the early lead, posting convincing 5 and 4 wins at the expense of Kyle Geary and Peter Rae.

Callum Stringer (No2) beat Park captain Mark Collie 3 and 2, while Brett Kennelly (No3) and Ian Boath (No6) both won with one hole to spare.

At Balmacewen, Otago Blue was always in control in a contest in which both teams scrambled their team orders.

At No6, Duncan Croudis was the first to finish, beating Andrew Hobbs by a resounding 7 and 6.

Tyrone Ratahi (No2) beat Michael Wray, and Brandon Hodgson (No 4) downed Gary Creedy, both with four holes to spare.

At No 1, Jason Hughes defeated Nicholas James but Otago Blue will have to be wary in the return match after dropping two games at home. Park captain Michael Minty accounted for Nick Borren at No3 while Kelly Adam (No5) beat Daniel Elder on the 17th green.
