Golf: Stage set for Senior A final

The stage is set for a gripping final of the men's metropolitan Senior A pennant series between St Clair and defending champion Otago Blue, at St Clair.

Otago Blue won a place in the final after beating newcomer Island Park 4 2 at Balmacewen on Saturday.

Round robin matches between the finalists were tight contests. There was a 3 3 draw at Balmacewen in May, and the teams tied again at St Clair a week ago.

The 2013 final between the two heavyweights was tied 3 3, with St Clair taking that title on a countback of holes.

St Clair gained home advantage for this Saturday's final after emerging unbeaten in 10 rounds, but players of this calibre compete well at any venue.

Much interest will centre on the selection of the St Clair team as the younger and less experienced players - Ryan Bellamy, Connor Ross and Jakob Bleach - all won against Otago Blue a week ago.

Island Park has performed well, finishing third of the six competing teams in its first year in Senior A, but it was no match for Otago Blue on Saturday.

Jason Hughes (No2) beat Reagan Cairns 4 and 3, while captain Brandon Hodgson (No5) downed Michael Wray in 14 holes.

Duncan Croudis (No4) and Daniel Elder (No6) also posted large margins at the expense of Monty Wong and Kelly Adam respectively.

Island Park captain and selector Michael Minty led from the front, beating Otago No1 Tyrone Ratahi with one hole to spare.

The closest contest was between the No4 golfers, which finished on the par 3 crossways final hole which substitutes for the famous Glen hole in frosty conditions.

Andrew Hobbs went on to the last hole one in front and this winning margin over Nick Borren remained when both golfers finished with pars.
