Golf: National final to St Peter's by 8 shots

St Peter's College scored a total of 425 for the team's best six rounds to win the New Zealand intercollegiate title by eight shots on the Manor Park course in Wellington yesterday.

Coached by former Balmacewen professional Simon Thomas, the St Peter's players from Cambridge averaged below 71 per player to dominate the national final.

Aquinus College finished in second place on 433 on the very soft tight Manor Park course.

Otago Boys' High School represented Otago after winning the local final in Balclutha in March.

The Dunedin team started poorly with all three counting scores in the eighties, captain Harry Smith leading the way with an 80. Smith improved to 75 in the afternoon while newcommer Jacob Bellamy led the way with a fine 73.

These improved scores helped lift Otago Boys' up the leaderboard after languishing near the bottom after the morning round.

Five Otago Boys' players will be joined by four other juniors from the province in the New Zealand under 19 championship which will be decided over three rounds on the Shandon course starting tomorrow and concluding on Friday.
