Golf: Presidents Cup place for Lee

New Zealander Danny Lee has made the 2015 Presidents Cup team to play the United States in early October.

Lee had to finish in the top 42 at the Deutsche Bank Championship yesterday and he did that.

It was not a comfortable ride for Lee fans, though, as he produced a round littered with inconsistency at TPC Boston.

Starting the day in the top 10, he dropped 27 places to finish tied for 33rd after shooting a 6-over par 77.

This season on the PGA Tour, Lee has recorded some impressive performances, none better than his debut PGA Tour win at the Greenbrier Classic in May.

Lee joins a prestigious and small group of New Zealand players to play the Presidents Cup.

Frank Nobilo made three appearances, in 1994, 1996 and 1998. Greg Turner played in 1998 and Michael Campbell in 2000 and 2005.

Now it is up to International team captain Nick Price and his American counterpart, Jay Haas, to make their two wildcard selections today to round out their line-ups for the biennial event, to be held in Incheon City, South Korea, on October 8-11.

The Deutsche Bank Championship was won by American Rickie Fowler, who took advantage of a late Henrik Stenson double-bogey to clinch a one-stroke victory.

A closing 3-under-par 68 was enough for Fowler, who began the day one stroke behind Stenson.

Fowler finished at 15-under 269, while Swede Stenson (70) claimed second on 14-under after finding a hazard with his tee shot at the par-3 16th.
