The Country women golfers had a convincing five-game win over their Town counterparts in the annual event on the Alexandra course on Sunday.

The contest was tight throughout most of the day as Country took a lunchtime 3-2 lead after the morning foursomes matches thanks to Maria Arhanic (Arrowtown) and Julie-Ann Beattie (Tapanui) getting home on the final green.

But it was one-way traffic in the afternoon as Country won the top six games on the way to posting an impressive 7.5-2.5 win.

In the top foursomes game, Susan Greig and Abigael Crawford (both St Clair) turned 1-up and won three more holes on the back nine to be 4-up.

Jo Hicks-Beach (Queenstown) and Liz McRae (Wanaka) fought back, winning the 15th and 16th holes, but lost the match when the 17th hole was halved.

In the afternoon, Hicks-Beach birdied the third to take a lead of one in the battle of the No 1 players.

Greig lost three holes in the middle of the match to trail by four but birdied the 12th and made a par on the 14th to get back to 2-down.

But this fightback was too little too late and Hicks-Beach won the match on the 16th green.

The No 2 players had a tight match with McRae and Crawford square after the first 10 holes.

Crawford won the 11th hole to take the lead but McRae turned the tables winning the next four holes to set up the win.
