Golf: Canterbury women strong

Canterbury was the dominant team in the South Island women's interprovincial tournament which was played over four rounds at Ashburton during the weekend.

Otago found Canterbury a tough opponent on Saturday, losing all eight games to the red and blacks who dominated the event.

However Otago had its best outing for several years, beating Tasman by 4.5 to 3.5 and Southland by 5 to 3, but losing to South Canterbury by 3 to 5.

In the Tasman match, Otago No1 Jo Hicks-Beach led the charge, beating Michelle Reordan by a convincing 6 and 5 margin.

Annabel Evans, at No3, downed Donna Mitchell on the final green, while Susan Greig made a successful return to representative golf, beating Tracy Bary by one.

Robyn Chambers gave Otago its fourth win at the expense of Natalee Reed, while Tracey Storer gave Otago the win with an important half with Sue Murray.

In the match against Southland, Hicks-Beach, at No1, beat Robyn Pullar on the final green while Chambers, at No7, won by the same margin.

Storer accounted for Fiona Murray in 16 holes, while Annabel Evans and Susan Greig had convincing wins at No3 and No4.

This was a major turnaround as Southland has dominated Otago in the annual Salisbury Cup events in recent years.

Against South Canterbury, Greig and Chambers had good wins, while Crawford and Shaw halved their matches.
