Golf: Honours shared

The Otago men's masters (over 40) team halved with Northland in the Freyberg Rosebowl on the Ngamotu course in New Plymouth yesterday.

Otago had a bye in the morning and has one win, one half and a loss after four rounds.

Andrew Hobbs went down to Northland No1 Saali Herewini on the 17th green.

Herewini birdied the second and third holes but Hobbs birdied the fourth.

The pair halved the seventh in birdiesbut Hobbs squared the match with a birdie 2 on the 13th.

The match remained square until Herewini birdied the 16th and Hobbs lost the 17th when his approach was blocked by trees.

Otago No2 Stephen Hitchcox made three birdies in the first seven holes to go two ahead.

But he lost the eighth and ninth holes and was one behind Peter Bone with four holes to play.

Hitchcoxwon 15 and 17 and birdied the final hole for a two up margin.

Simon Boland had a convincing 4 and 2 win over Northland No3 Bob Shirley.

Greg Johnson (No4) went down to Scott Wilson by 5 and 3, after turning two light.

At No5 Gary Creedy made birdies on 16 and 18 to halve his match.

Otago will be out to post its second win this morning, when it plays Poverty Bay-East Coast.
