Otago hit the lead in section two with three wins from three outings in the men's national interprovincial tournament after two victories in scorching conditions on the Otatara course near Invercargill yesterday.

Otago beat Auckland 3-2 in the morning and finished strongly to beat Tasman 4-1 in the afternoon.

The three wins give Otago three points and 11 games going into the fifth round against Hawkes Bay this morning, but it took a gutsy finish in both matches to enable Otago to reach a strong position at the halfway stage of section play.

Auckland, smarting from the spanking it received at the hands of Northland on Tuesday, came out of the blocks strongly with a dismal leader board for Otago after the first five holes.

Auckland led in four matches while the No 1 players, Duncan Croudis and Tae Koh, were all square.

However, by the turn, No 2 Nick Borren had gone 2-up and No 4 Fraser MacLachlan had returned to square.

Borren went on to beat Johnny Tynan with two holes to spare while MacLachlan lost to Mat Tiplady on the final green.

Otago has become renowned for strong fightbacks which was evident when No 3 Brent McEwan came from 3-down with four to go to snatch a valuable half against Joshua Leitch.

Otago's main turnaround man is No 5 Chris Snow and he did not disappoint, either in the morning or the afternoon.

Snow trailed by one with two holes to play but won the final two holes to beat Leonard Powell and put the nail in the Auckland coffin.

In the afternoon, McEwan and MacLachlan shot ahead early, each leading by four at the turn, but Tasman held the lead in the other three matches.

The situation remained unchanged with four holes to play with Croudis one behind, Borren 2-down and Snow one light.

Snow was the first to reverse Otago's fortunes, winning the 16th and 17th holes to take the lead.

He halved the final hole with Blair Bavin in pars to give Otago its third game and ensured the team win.

Borren fought back but went down to David Riordan on the 17th green while Croudis came from behind and won the final three holes to beat SBS individual winner Ryan Chisnall on the final green.
