Canterbury in section one and Manawatu-Wanganui in section two are the only teams to post two wins on the first day of the women's national interprovincial in fine conditions in Ashburton yesterday.

Manawatu-Wanganui's morning win was a 4- result over Otago which also lost 3-1 to North Harbour in the afternoon.

In the morning, Otago No 1 Jo Hicks-Beach got off to a flying start chipping in on the first hole to take an early lead.

Maraea Durie was level with the card to lead Hicks-Beach by one at the turn but Durie then won 14 and 16 with birdies before finishing off the match on the 17th green.

No 2 Abigael Crawford was the only Otago player to register on the scoreboard despite turning 1-down.

Crawford made a timely birdie on the 17th using a Texas wedge from the apron to get back to square with Leanne Brown and the pair halved the final hole.

Tracey Storer struggled at times and was always behind Manawatu No 3 Tara Raj, eventually losing 6 and 4.

Annabel Evans started well but could not maintain momentum and turned 2-down to Katherine Paskins before struggling to keep the ball in play and losing on the 14th green.

No 5 Susan Greig paid the price for a slow start and was playing catch-up after turning three behind Tania Hook.

She fought back to trail by one with two holes to play but the match finished when Hook made an impressive birdie on the 17th.

After disappointment in the morning, Otago made a more determined effort against North Harbour in the afternoon and the match was tied 2-2 at the turn.

Hicks-Beach played par golf in the afternoon and looked set to post a win at dormie 2-up over Vyan Park.

But she lost 17 to a birdie and the final hole to a par to halve the match.

Crawford and Storer struggled against their Harbour opponents, both players losing on the 12th green by resounding 7 and 6 margins.

Evans played well on the outward nine turning square with Shani White but a couple of drives on the back nine proved costly.

She was three light with three holes to play but won the 16th with a par before she ran out of holes on the penultimate green.

Greig did not make the same mistake in the afternoon and started strongly to lead Vaha Fapiano by four at the halfway stage.

The former No 1 did not relent on the back nine and posted a convincing 5 and 4 result for Otago's only win.
