Golf: Thirteen proves to be lucky for two

You would be forgiven for thinking holes in one are common if you were at the St Clair Golf Club on Tuesday night.

That is because Jed Adamson and Peter Fenton pulled it off on the par 3 13th hole within an hour of each other.

They were playing in the club's Business House competition, which sees teams of four go head-to-head over nine holes every Tuesday night during summer.

"It was very windy when I was playing,'' Adamson said.

"I just used a wee rescue wood. I punched it into the wind and [my opponent] Dave Hutton, who is a good golfer, was saying, ‘That's a golf shot'.

"You could just see it bending in and going straight for the pin. It was on a mission.''

It was Adamson's second hole in one since taking up golf about 10 years ago.

Hutton was also there to see his first, as a teammate, a few years ago on the par 3 seventh at St Clair.

After his hole in one on the 13th pin, which is 160m from the black tee, Adamson went to the clubhouse for a beer.

It was there he found out Fenton had done exactly the same thing.

"I thought he stole my limelight,'' Adamson joked.

"It was very unusual. Not very often you get a hole in one up here, so to get two in an hour is very unusual.''

Fenton, who has played golf for seven years, used a six iron to achieve his first hole in one.

"It just potted on and disappeared. They go close quite often and everyone thinks it's going in, but the thing disappeared.''

Adamson and Fenton, who play off 20 and 17 handicaps respectively, describe themselves as casual golfers.

Both are members at St Clair and usually play a round on Saturday.
