Golf: Canterbury dominates SI age-group champs

Canterbury was the dominant team at the South Island age-group championships, winning both the under-19 and under-16 team titles on the Tinwald course, in Ashburton, yesterday.

The under-19 quintet headed Tasman by 10 shots while the under-16 team blitzed the field with a 73-stroke winning margin.

Tasman finished second in each section and the two Otago teams took the bronze medals.

The Canterbury dominance continued in the individual events with six of the eight men's and women's titles going to Christchurch golfers.

Liam Judkins was the only Otago player to feature, winning the men's under-13 title by a comfortable margin.

In particular, the strong junior contingent from the Russley Club dominated the tournament, led by 15-year-old Hiroki Miya who scored 66, 67 and 72 for the lowest tournament total.

Several of the Otago golfers were not in their best form.

Jakob Bleach (St Clair) carded the lowest three-round total of 221.

Lower Waitaki's Jonathan MacKay was one shot back, while Will Young joined Terry Kim on 223 for his best tournament performance to date.

Jack Turner and Scott Clark were three further shots back.

Turner finished in style with a two under par 70, to finish in style.
