Golf: Wray’s eagles spur Island Park to victory

Despite the absence of two marque players, Island Park finished strongly to beat Otago Gold, 4-2, on the Waldronville course on Saturday.

Captain Michael Minty and Andrew Hobbs were unavailable but No3 Mike Wray laid the scaffold for the home team's success.

Wray sank 50m pitches on the first and sixth holes for eagles, as well as birdieing the third and eighth holes to be six under par after the first eight holes.

This scintillating start gave 13-year-old Joseph Hancock little chance and Wray emerged the victor on the 14th green.

At No6, Kelly Adam accounted for Murray Edgar with three holes to spare, while Jeremy Morgan and Will Young posted 5 and 4 wins to make it two-all.

It was left to the top two players to decide the outcome.

Otago's Ben Turner was one up and Jimmy Philip square with two holes to play.

For Island Park, Monty Wong won the final two holes to take the honours, while Jarden Hammond won the final hole with a par when Philip made a bogey 5.

It was a weekend of absentees.

Five of the top St Clair squad were unavailable, as they are on an annual playing tour in Australia.

It was left to former Otago No1 Tony Giles and the younger brigade to see St Clair home, as they beat North Otago in a tight tussle, 4-2.

Three of the games finished on the final green, as Giles, Ryan Bellamy, Connor Ross and Jakob Bleach posting wins for St Clair.

Gary Creedy put North Otago on the board with a final-hole win over Mathew Crawford, while Stephen Waby downed Jacob Bellamy on the 16th green.

Yesterday, Otago Blue was back on song with a convincing 5.5-0.5 win over the Chisholm Links sextet.

Michael Smith, Brandon Hodgson and Daniel Elder had good wins for Otago while Peter Rae and Matthew Heaton took Nick Borren and Ben Patston to the final greens.

Chisholm Links looked set to win one match but masters golfer Sean Geary three-putted on the final green, allowing Jason Hughes to escape with a half.
