Regan King (Green Island) will make her third trip across the Tasman to compete at the Australian rhythmic gymnastics championships later this month.

It will be an important event in Melbourne, because places in the New Zealand and Australian Commonwealth Games teams will be at stake.

New Zealand is sending a team of 27 gymnasts, four of them from Otago.

Selected alongside King are fellow Green Island gymnast Rosie Hardie (17), and Sophie Coutts (16) and Shannon Thorsnes (17), from the Dunedin Gymnastics Academy.

King (18) is competing in her third Australian championships. She finished 14th overall in 2012 and also competed in 2008.

This is the seventh time she has competed in major events across the Tasman. She has also contested the Queensland and New South Wales championships.

The Otago Polytechnic science student is in her 13th year in the sport and still finds it challenging.

''The sport is part of me,'' she said.

''I can't imagine myself not doing it. I like performing and enjoy the fun dances.''

Hardie, a pupil at Bayfield High School, was the best-performed New Zealand gymnast at the Australian championships in 2012 when she finished 12th overall.

She has been competing in gymnastics for seven years and her best disciplines are the ball and the ribbon.

Coutts, a pupil at St Hilda's, wants to finish in the top 15 in her age group in Melbourne. Her best discipline is the rope.

Thorsnes, a pupil at Logan Park High School, has been competing in gymnastics for 10 years.

''It is part of my life,'' she said.

''I like performing in competitions and I like wearing my sparkling gold uniform.''

Keita McGowan, a coach at the Dunedin Gymnastics Academy for the past 16 years, will be part of the official New Zealand team for the fifth time as manager and judge.

The Australian championships will be held in Melbourne from April 28 to May 1.
