Hockey: City prevails in furious match

City Highlanders beat Kings A 5-3 in the third round of the premier men's competition on Saturday night.

The game got off to a fast start with City taking the lead after just seven minutes through youngster Nick Elder.

Elder got a deflection on Jarred Hewitt's cross from the top corner, catching goalkeeper Anil Patel off his line.

Heath Dickson then sneaked one between Patel and the post to extend City's lead.

Kings pulled one back after 19 minutes through Todd Gould.

Another of City's youngsters, Jeremy Morris, replied soon after, with the Kings defence giving him both the time and space to blast the ball into the back corner of the goal.

Gould then pounced on similar errors by the City defence at the other end to keep Kings in the game.

Two minutes later, Morris got his second in similar circumstances to his first.

The second half saw a tight midfield tussle between both teams.

It took 31 minutes for Luke Blunt to score for Kings, and then two minutes later, Morris again stepped up and put one in the top corner of the goal.

Albany fought hard for a 6-2 win over the Tuataras, with Kane Russell getting three for Albany.

In the University derby, University A came out on top, winning 6-2.

St Hilda's thrilled spectators with a shock 2-0 win over Momona A in the premier women's competition.

The game began the way it finished, with St Hilda's dominating play.

Kate Kernahan was given a yellow card, leaving only 10 St Hilda's players on the field, but the schoolgirls held out the strong Momona attack, largely due to goalkeeper Ginny Wilson's intelligent and agile work.

About halfway through the half, with Kernahan back on, St Hilda's rapidly moved the ball from one end into the attacking goal and Kernahan scored with a spectacular reverse-stick shot into the corner.

This spurred the Momona players into some action.

They began to string some passes together but the basics let them down and the schoolgirls went into the break leading 1-0.

As the half progressed, St Hilda's, which had been attacking up the left a lot, began to use the right.

To the delight of the school supporters, this led to a field goal put in by Polly Inglis to clinch the victory.

Millie Cowan played well in the Momona defence, but Momona lacked direction and ambition compared with St Hilda's.

In other games, University A beat Momona B 4-1 and Taieri and City Highlanders A drew 1-1.
