Taieri A beat University A 2-0 in the women's Dunedin premier
hockey competition at the weekend.
The first half was an even affair, although the University
players looked slower than usual, possibly due to some of the
team having played all week in the Under-21 National
Tournament. The students were camped in the opposition
quarter and trying for deflection goals but Taieri kept
saving balls off the line and University uncharacteristically
could not seem to finish.
Taieri did build up through the centre well but again, its
shots on goal were saved or the last attack thwarted by good
defence.
After halftime, though, it was a different story. The Taieri
players were revved up to go and it was only minutes before a
field goal was put in by Felicity Johnston.
Taieri increased its pressure with Vicky Clarke-Joyce
dominating the midfield and Susan Dunn clearing up everything
at the back. Lucy Shepphard then broke into the left side of
the circle, sent the ball across the circle and a deflection
from a University defender looped past the goalkeeper.
In other games: St Hilda's beat Momona A 2-1 while City
Highlanders and King's A had a 0-0 draw.
