Hockey: Momona still unbeaten after hard-fought game

Momona A is the only unbeaten team in the women's premier 1 competition after beating City Highlanders A 1-0 on Saturday.

Both teams had won their first two games since the top women's league split into two.

Momona, as it has done so often this season, took a chance when it came to grind out a win in a game that was close from the beginning.

Both sides were passing well when they had possession and defending hard when they lost it.

Tessa Jopp looked to provide a spark for Momona on several occasions. She was busy in the middle of the field and charged forward with intent but struggled to find the killer pass to unlock the City defence.

The first shot on target came 20 minutes into the game from Momona's Kate Morris, who smashed the ball from the edge of the circle and drew an excellent left-footed save from City goalkeeper Lily Le Brun.

City replied with a penalty corner. It produced a neat set play that saw passes fly around the circle but failed to work a shooting opportunity.

Momona passed the ball upfield and broke the deadlock when the ball fell to Dayna Holland, who calmly slotted home to give her side the lead.

Minutes from halftime, City got its best chance when some good passing up the sideline saw Janine Joyce receive the ball in front of goal, but she could not find a way around Momona goalkeeper Tessa Hewlett.

The game was more aggressive in the second half as City tried to get back in the game and Momona showed it was not content to just defend its lead.

Claudia Peyroux intercepted for Momona and drove into the circle before cutting the ball back to Maddie McLean, who was unlucky to see her shot hit the post.

Momona was starting to dominate and create more chances. Jopp made a good run up the middle but saw her shot saved by Le Brun.

City was not seeing much of the ball but looked dangerous on the counterattack. Sarah Thomas broke away and drew a good save from Hewlett before narrowly missing the rebound.

City threw everything at Momona in the final five minutes but could not break through.

In the other premier 1 women's game, University White beat Taieri A 2-0.
