Momona beat University Black 5-0 in the premier women's competition on Saturday but the game was closer than the score indicates.

The game began with Momona on attack and a penalty corner awarded but this was well cleared, and a run up the left by Tessa Hocking pushed the students into the circle.

For some time, this typified the game as Momona created most of the attack and University defended brilliantly and then returned the ball back up but without any outcome.

Eventually, this pattern was broken when Courtney Ross took a free hit very quickly in Momona's quarter, skilfully weaved the ball into the circle and passed across the goalie to Mary Bollen, who popped the ball into the University goal.

University demonstrated its skills in defence with a brilliantly composed clearing move and two good saves from Momona penalty corners.

The students then played their patterns of back passes and long balls up to get into the circle and put Momona under some pressure, leaving defender Millie Cowan forced to sweep the ball out the sideline.

However, Momona lifted its field play and added another goal to lead 2 0 at the break.

Momona got a third field goal shortly after halftime and put in many air shots which were well saved by University goalie Tessa Gregory Hunt.

Better cross field passing led to a successful reverse shot from the top of the circle by Claudia Peyroux.

University looked tired, and a fifth Momona goal - Peyroux scoring off a deflection - completed the scoring.

Aleisha Parbhu played well for University Black.

In the other premier games, City downed St Hilda's 4-1, and University A beat Taieri A 4-0.
