Hockey: Tight tussle between Panthers, King's

A 2-2 draw followed a tight tussle between the University Black Panthers and King's United A in the Dunedin men's premier competition on Saturday.

The game started slowly as both sides took turns getting halfway to their goal before being pushed back by the opposition.

King's broke the cycle a few minutes in as Aaron Fahey, looking completely unfazed by the Panthers' defence, powered the ball into the goal.

The Panthers looked well on their way to grabbing an equaliser after being awarded a penalty corner, but the ball flew past them after they were unable to trap it.

They redeemed themselves on their next one after Hitaua Arahanga Doyle slyly flicked the ball to the top of the net.

King's was keen to get the lead back and, moments before halftime, Nick Cantwell scored from a swift shot from the edge of the circle.

After the break, the defenders for King's continued to keep the Panthers at bay.

The Panthers were having issues with penalty corners throughout the game, only converting one of the several they were awarded.

Despite this, the Panthers kept King's from scoring for the rest of the game, and Arahanga Doyle found an opening in the final minutes to score the equaliser.

In other men's premier games, KETOB A players cheered triumphantly after they finally ended their nine week losing streak, beating the Taieri Tuataras 2-1, and the University Blue Whales beat the Albany Alligators 2-1, to win the points cup for the first round.
