Hockey: Lum snappiest as Alligators prevail

The Albany Alligators worked out the kinks from last week's loss, beating the University Black Panthers 5-1 in the men's premier competition on Saturday.

Despite no goals being scored until 20 minutes into the game, both sides were playing hard and fast hockey the whole time.

Albany's Richmond Lum was the standout in the first half. Lum swiftly weaved through the opposition and intercepted cleanly.

The first goal of the match was a stellar team effort. Lum intercepted the ball in the Panthers circle and instead of hitting it out, he passed it up to Aarie Verwey, who smacked the ball to Josh Caldwell in the circle, and Caldwell scored.

Before halftime, Albany followed this with another two goals from Joshua Smith and Jason Dungey, who casually tapped the ball in for his goal.

After the break, the Panthers continued their run of bad luck with penalty corners, not managing to convert any.

A great run down the turf by Panthers Paresh Dayal and Hitaua Arahanga Doyle looked like a sure thing but their attempt was pipped at the last minute by the goalie.

The Panthers had several close calls and finally managed to get on the scoreboard after Thomas Gardiner slid the ball in near the end of the game.

Albany finished with goals from Gabriel Rawcliffe and Caldwell, who managed to score after grabbing a ball that the Panthers thought was cleared from the circle.

In the other men's premier match, the University Blue Whales beat Kings United 4-1. In the men's premier 2 competition, the University Seals beat KETOB A 3-2 and the Taieri Tuataras beat Albany B 11-1.
