Both Southern under-21 hockey sides started their respective national tournaments in the perfect fashion on the opening day at the McMillan Turf in Dunedin yesterday.

Southern Men won a shootout against Capital after an exciting and swift game left the sides tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time, while the Southern Women took care of Capital Women 4-2.

Early on, Capital was slightly more dominant with pressure around and in their attacking circle, but Southern hung in like terriers to win a penalty corner and succeed, with drag flicker Kieran O'Connor putting the side 1-0 up.

For Capital, Ollie Logan scored from a penalty corner to even up the game, as Capital began to look dangerous.

In the second half, two greens and two yellow cards were awarded as the match intensified.

But with three minutes to go, Southern player John Thorn took advantage of a yellow card for a Capital player by dribbling down the left and into the circle.

With a defender's foot in the way, Thorn won a penalty corner.

This was not scored off but resulted in a stroke being awarded, which was skilfully taken by O'Connor to even the score.

Capital won a final penalty corner right on fulltime, which was saved by Waddell, to the relief of Southern supporters.

Southern then had the best of the strokes with Kieran O'Connor, Daniel Guthrie and Josh Smith helping it to 3-1 in the shootout.

In the other men's games, North Harbour beat Midlands 4-1 and Canterbury beat Auckland 4-0.

Two very early field goals in the women's game between Southern and Capital set the game alight, the first to Capital's Ashleigh McNaughton and the second to Southern's Charlotte Eastman.

Towards the end of the first half, out of the blue, Capital's Freya Hawes struck a fantastic reverse stick shot to put Capital ahead 2-1, but this was soon answered when Southern's Lydia Shirley flicked a successful penalty corner ball low into the left side of the goal to make it 2-2 at halftime.

Neve McLean scored the third goal for a greatly improved Southern from a second-phase rebound.

A final goal came from the breakdown of a penalty corner when Leah Butt stretched wide to shoot.

In the other women's games, North Harbour beat Midlands 2-2 (3-1 shootout) and Auckland beat Canterbury 2-0.
