Hockey: Momona A holds on to secure victory

Momona A held on to snatch victory over the University White Huskies in their premier women's hockey match on Saturday.

Momona won 2-1 in the fast-paced game played in wet conditions.

University was dominant and kept Momona pinned down its own end for most of the first half.

It was a scrappy game and, not surprisingly, the first penalty corner came quickly.

University failed to convert its penalty corner and Momona smashed the ball down field.

Momona looked like it would score but could not get through University's impenetrable defence.

Both teams smacked the ball hard but University still had the upper hand over Momona.

University's Tori Vao scored early for the first goal of the match.

Momona responded by a rapid set play down the sideline to Claudia Peyroux, who scored the second goal.

Momona was back in the game but Peyroux was given a green card for a bad tackle and, at halftime, the score was 1-1.

The rain did not ease up in the second half, and neither did the battle for the ball.

The ball ping-ponged between the teams with heavy tackles from both sides.

Momona found itself back in University's circle and, despite their opportunities, both teams failed to do the business.

The fast pace resulted in a collision between University and Momona A players.

Momona suddenly caught University short and Gemma O'Connell was placed perfectly to score the final goal of the match.

It was a combative performance from both teams and the win could have gone either way.

Keiza Taylor was the pick of the University players, and Peyroux had a strong game for Momona.

In other games, City Highlanders A beat Taieri A 4-1 and the University Black Stingrays downed St Hilda's 1-0.
