Hockey: King’s United too good for Taieri

As the scoreline suggests, King's United A dominated in its 5-0 win over the Taieri Tuataras in the premier one men's game at McMillan Hockey Centre in Dunedin on Saturday.

King's started well, allowing Aaron Fahey to score after only two minutes on the clock with a quick shot that raced along the turf through the Taieri defence and straight between the goalkeeper's legs.

It took little time for King's to capitalise again.

This time it was Lawson Davison who found the back of the net to put King's 2-0 up.

Taieri fought back and managed to put the King's defence under pressure as it forced a penalty corner but the shot went wide and King's held on to its 2-0 lead.

King's controlled the match as both teams fought hard to hold possession.

Ten minutes before halftime, Arthur Ibbotson swiftly flicked the ball just past the Taieri keeper and into the back of the net to take King's to a commanding 3-0 lead.

However, King's was not done as Fahey passed the ball perfectly and Davison took full advantage with a strong shot that gave him a second goal and put King's 4-0 up at halftime.

The second half was less eventful as both teams struggled to make the most of goal scoring-opportunities until Davison lobbed an aerial shot from the centre line which dribbled through the legs of the Taieri goalkeeper to give his side its final goal.

King's United A captain Rory McLean said he was pleased with the 5-0 win and his side's goals were good to watch but overall the game was "scrappy as hell''

In the other premier one game, Albany A beat University Blue Whales 2-1 in a penalty shootout after the scores were 1-1 at fulltime.

In the premier two grade, the University Black Panthers beat University Trout 6-0.
