Hockey: Tight game goes way of Albany

Albany A followed up last week's success in the premier men's competition with a 2-1 win against University A on Saturday.

Jason Dungey opened the scoring for Albany early in the first half, converting a penalty corner.

Albany's lead was short-lived as University came back, putting the Albany defence under pressure.

Eventually, Nick Saunders managed to work the ball past the Albany goalkeeper to level the scores.

The second half featured just one goal, Callum Bailey running down to recover a wayward pass before beating the defence and depositing the ball in the back of the net.

Albany's Rod Rzepecky and Scott Harris received yellow cards for rough tackling.

University kept the pressure on and prevented Albany from establishing the devastating combinations through the midfield that allowed it to dismantle University B last week.

In other games, the University A and B clash ended with the A team winning 7-2, and Kings United beat City Highlanders 3-0.

Taieri had a 3-0 win against Momona in the premier women's competition.

The game began evenly but it was not long before Taieri used its well-spaced passing patterns to move the ball towards goal and force a penalty corner, which was successfully struck by Jo Johnston.

Soon after, Hayley Bayne scored to make it 2-0.

Taieri continued to exert pressure and Joan Woodward batted a rebound ball into goal to give her side a 3-0 lead at half-time.

Despite Momona winning two penalty corners in the second spell it could not finish them off and the score remained 3-0 at the final whistle.

In other games, University White beat Kings 8-0 and City Highlanders beat Varsity Blue 4-2.
