Troy Brouwer scored midway through the third period to break a tie and give the St Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

The defeat means defending Stanley Cup champions Chicago were eliminated.

Brouwer, the only Blues player to have appeared in more than two Game 7s in his career, got a rebound off the post and slid the puck into the net at 8:31 of the third period.

It was his first goal of the series and the eighth playoff goal of his career.

The Blues, who won an opening-round series for the first time since 2012, will play the Dallas Stars, who finished two points ahead of them in the Central Division in the regular season, in the Western Conference semifinals.

It was the first Game 7 win for the Blues since 1999, when current Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was the St Louis coach, and their first Game 7 win at home since 1991.

The Blues built a 3-1 lead in the series before losing Games 5 and 6.

The Blackhawks almost tied Monday's game with four minutes to go when a shot by Andrew Shaw hit both posts but stayed out of the net.

After spotting the Blues an early 2-0 lead, the Blackhawks came back to tie the game on goals by Marian Hossa and Shaw.

Hossa took advantage of a Blues turnover to score his 52nd career playoff goal with 1:30 left in the first period, beating goalie Brian Elliott (31 saves) on the glove side.

The only penalty called in the first two periods led to the tying goal.

Kevin Shattenkirk was called for hooking Marcus Kruger and hust 31 seconds later, Shaw scored his team-leading fourth goal of the series.

His pass, intended for Patrick Kane, instead deflected off defenseman Jay Bouwmeester in the crease and slid past Elliott into the net 3:20 into the second period.

The goal continued a trend in the series, during which the Blackhawks outscored the Blues 11-3 in the second period.

The Blues built the early lead on goals from Jori Lehtera just one minute into the game and Colton Parayko at 13:43 of the first period.

Lehtera deflected a shot by Bouwmeester past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford (23 saves) for his first career playoff goal, and Parayko scored on a blast from the point while Alexander Steen was screening Crawford in front of the net.
