Rugby League kicks off in Otago this weekend, with the annual nines tournament at Opoho Park today.

Twelve teams will line up in the competition: five from Dunedin, four from Christchurch, two from Invercargill and one from Timaru.

The teams will be split into three pools.

The top four teams will go on to compete in the cup competition while the others will be split into the plate and bowl competitions.

Tournament organiser and coach of South Pacific Raiders David Reedy said the tournament would be a good hit out before the Otago club season kicks off next weekend.

''We get to play teams from out of town which is always good, because we don't get that too often down here,'' he said.

Reedy said the Canterbury teams would be tough but there were some good local sides, too, including defending champion University.

The first matches kick off at 10am, when University will take on South Pacific Raiders on field 1 and Kia Toa Tigers play Biggy Bears on field 2.

The cup final will be played at 5.40pm. It will be preceded by the bowl and plate finals.
