Linwood Keas, of Christchurch, beat invitational side Briggy Bears 30-0 to win the Otago rugby league nines tournament held at Opoho Park on Saturday.

Linwood's Paul Seuli was awarded the golden boot for player of the tournament while Ben McKerchar from South Pacific Raiders was named local player of the tournament.

The final was a culmination of a full day of rugby league that included 12 teams from Dunedin, Christchurch, Invercargill and Timaru.

Tournament organiser and South Pacific Raiders coach David Reedy was pleased with how successful the day was.

Reedy said the tournament expanded this year to include teams from outside of Otago for the first time.

Another Christchurch-based side, Riccarton, won the second-tier bowl competition and University got a win in the plate section to notch up some silverware for the Dunedin clubs.

The Otago club rugby league competition kicks into action this Saturday at the Kensington Oval with five teams competing.

Those teams are East Coast Eagles, Kia Toa Tigers, South Pacific Raiders, University and Cowboys from Invercargill.

It will be the first time an Invercargill-based side will play in the Otago competition.
