League: Cowboys' form continues

The Southland Cowboys continued to make an impression in Otago rugby league circles with another comprehensive victory, beating University 30 16 at the Kensington Oval on Saturday.

The first half was tight and the Invercargill side held an 8 6 lead at halftime, but it was a different story after the break, as the Cowboys piled on 22 more points.

Hooker Billy Cooper scored two tries and was one of the standouts, alongside the man of the match, prop Tuki Hiko.

Other Cowboys try scorers were Dylan Lovett, Haami Gemmell, Josh Gough and Shannon Gage. Gough also added three conversions.

University scored three tries, Harry Johnson, Tyson Ball and James Devoe all touching down.

Loose forward Dom Tola was University's best on the day.

In the other game, the Kia Toa Tigers had a sound 34 18 win over the South Pacific Raiders.

The Tigers, making their first appearance of the season, were comprehensive winners after leading 18 6 at halftime.

Centre Apii Taia led the way, scoring a hat trick in a man of the match performance.

His game was complemented by a double to loose forward Shane Unahi and tries to stand off Vila Apuula and replacement Kite Motaane.

For the Raiders, Jordan Tua, Ben McKerchar and Josh Liuaana all scored tries, while loose forward Adam Tapsell had a strong game both on defence and with the ball in hand.
