Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett hailed Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford as the Broncos finals X-factor after the young halves engineered a 47-12 thrashing of South Sydney.

Hunt scored three tries and Milford two on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium as the Broncos bounced back from their last-start loss to Sydney Roosters to reclaim the lead at the top of the NRL ladder.

Milford and Hunt struggled to break apart the Roosters' defence last week but showed their superstar qualities in handing Souths their biggest loss in five years.

"I thought last week was a pretty good thing for Ben and Anthony to play in a game of that quality and to get some confidence out of it and realise that is the way things are going to be for the next six weeks, they brought their A-game," Bennett said.

"No one is going to win this comp without their halves playing well, it is the X-Factor."

The win significantly bolstered the Broncos for-and-against and they can earn a top two spot, and a crucial home final, with a win over Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium in the final round.

Broncos captain Justin Hodges said Milford and Hunt would take great confidence out of their dismantling of the Rabbitohs.

"I thought they were outstanding they really took control when we needed them to," he said.

"They really stood up for us."
