Kiwis halfback Kieran Foran has taken an indefinite break from league due to serious concerns about his health and well-being.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that Foran has been in hospital this week while struggling emotionally with the breakdown of his relationship with long-time partner Rebecca Pope.

Foran has been absent from Parramatta Eels training all week and the club tonight released a statement saying their captain had been granted leave from NRL duties while he dealt with personal issues.

"The Parramatta Eels have granted Kieran Foran an indefinite leave of absence to seek the best possible medical treatment regarding a personal matter," the Eels said. "The club will be making no further comment and request that the media respect Kieran's privacy at this time."

The Telegraph reported that Foran would miss at least three games while specialists monitored his health, ruling him out of the Kiwis' Anzac test with Australia in Newcastle next Friday.

According to the paper, Foran had been struggling to cope with the pressure of the NRL and his relationship problems, a pair of issues compounded by an ongoing wage row with former club Manly.

Most of Foran's teammates were unaware of the seriousness of the 25-year-old's problems, but coach Brad Arthur had been a close confidant and insisted Foran put health ahead of football.
