New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle has won gold in the final of
the 800m freestyle on the second day of the world short
course championships in Turkey this morning.
Boyle trailed world champion Lotte Friis from Denmark until
the midway mark, before dominating the final 400m against a
world-class field. She won in 8:08.82, an improvement of
seven seconds on her previous best.
She is just the second New Zealand swimmer to win gold at the
world short course championships, following on from Moss
Burmester in 2008.
The 25-year-old, coached by Mark Regan, provisionally broke
the New Zealand 400m record on her way to her victory and was
only 0.4s outside the championship record.
Friis was second ahead of American champion Chloe Sutton.
Boyle was fourth in the 800m at the London Olympics.
