The co-driver of a rally car which crashed on a rural road in North Otago says ''adrenaline got the better of us''.

''From the way Dad's talking, his Targa days are over,'' Jackson Fowles said yesterday.

His father, Greg, suffered a broken right femur, a fractured left ankle, several broken bones in his right foot and lacerations, and remains in Dunedin Hospital.

''I came out better with a minor fracture in my left hand and some bruising.''

The Wellington pair were in their 1992 Honda Civic when they crashed at high speed into a clay bank in Glenn Settlement Rd, about 4.20pm on Wednesday.

''We were simply going too fast for the corner. Gravel made the road slippery and we had just passed another car, so I guess the adrenaline got the better of us.

''Up to that point, the rally was going great.''

His father was trapped from just below the waist down for an hour and a-half, before being extricated and flown to hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

Jackson Fowles expressed his thanks to the medical personnel, and those who helped them at the scene.

That included crew from the first car that found them, the co-driver of another rally car who helped him out of the car and then supported him once he passed out, and another co-driver who applied her first-aid experience at the scene.

And while the crash may have dented his father's racing plans, '' I can't wait to join in with my own race car''.

''It's an amazing event. However, I will be the one driving next time.''
