Rallying: Paddon to stay relaxed

Hayden Paddon has processed the disappointment of crashing out of the previous two rounds of the World Rally Championship and will be taking a back-to-basics approach at this week's Rally Poland.

"Obviously, there was a bit of emotion shed at the last event which, when put into perspective, some people may wonder why, when it's part of the sport. However, what some don't realise is that this is not just a sport for us, it's a lifestyle and a massive sacrifice for myself and many others that we are here,'' Paddon explained in his recent newsletter.

The key for this Polish event will be to "simply enjoy the thrill and driving inside the car'', and not push for any result.

By staying relaxed and not rushing the process of striving for a podium finish, he hoped the result would come naturally.

The high-speed make-up of Rally Poland's stages suit Paddon's natural driving style, making enjoyment easy for the Kiwi rally star.

"Coming from New Zealand, we have always enjoyed the fast stages like we'll experience in Poland. It's a rally we naturally enjoy with some of the fastest stages of the championship. These are more to my liking and with a good test in Poland last week to fine-tune the settings on the car, we're ready,'' he said.

Paddon will be running fifth on the road for the special stages from today until Sunday, a position dictated by his fifth position in the WRC drivers' championship.

The sandy Polish roads tend to favour the early runners and can be cut up by the repeated loops.

Hyundai Motorsport's three-car entry for the 73rd Rally Poland has Thierry Neuville and Paddon representing the Hyundai Shell World Rally Team, while Dani Sordo is the sole entry for Hyundai Mobis World Rally Team in this event.

Rally Poland is made up of 21 special stages run over a competitive distance of 306.1km.

The action starts tonight with one special stage in Mikoajki, north of Warsaw, before nine stages tomorrow when the crews travel further north towards the border of Kaliningrad for three repeated stages and end the day with a special stage at the Mikoajki Arena.

Sunday is a short 59.6km day with four stages.
