Dunedin and Alexandra riders had some promising results at the South Island championships in Rangiora at the weekend.
The riders, representing two clubs, combined for a gold, two silvers, seven bronze medals and a fourth placing in the various grades.
Ben James (Alexandra) won the only gold medal, in the 7-year-old boys race, and clubmate Duncan Sutherland won silver in the 12-year-old boys event.
The Dunedin club had a range of good results in an event held in hot conditions that attracted some of the North Island's leading riders.
Olivia Keach (8-year-old girls), Oliver Gilmour (12-year-old boys), Grace Finnerty (14-year-old girls), Kyle Rutherford (15-year-old boys), Hamish Burrow (16-year-old boys and 15-20 cruiser male) all claimed bronze medals.
The older brigade - George Hatzis (second, 45-49 cruiser), Terry Finnerty (third, 45-49 cruiser) and Anthony Devereux (fourth, 45-49 cruiser) - also rode well.
Logan Keach (eighth, 10-year-old boys) and Jacob Wadsworth (12th, 8-year-old boys) performed well in the preliminaries but fell out of medal contention due to crashes.
Dunedin BMX Club president Jason Wadsworth said he was ''happy and proud of all our riders''.
BikeNZ high performance rider Daniel Franks (Christchurch) beat 18-year-old rising star Trent Jones (Kaiapoi) and Matthew Davies (Christchurch) to win the elite men's category.
Franks and Jones will both travel to Perth in search of UCI points later this month for the Probikx series, as part of the BikeNZ team.
With no elite category on the women's side of the championships, teenage star Tahlia Hansen (Rangiora) won the 16-year-old title as well as the 11-29 years cruiser class on her home track.
