Otago rider Erin Greene celebrated a podium finish at the world 24hr championships in Scotland yesterday - and she will not have to travel so far in a couple of years.

Greene, who divides her time between Dunedin and Queenstown, was third in the elite women's category at the event in Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis.

She was ''stoked'' to finish third, with the help of crew Tom Lamb and Michael Weatherston.

It was a successful day for the New Zealanders, as Kim Hurst (elite women), Amanda Brooks (40-44 women) and Ryan Hunt (under-23 men) claimed gold, John White won silver in the 60-plus men's race, and James Maguire finished fourth in the single-speed category.

Good news followed when it was announced Rotorua would host the world 24hr race in 2016.

Tim and Belinda Farmer, from Nduro Events, will run the championships.

''Sometimes, I have to pinch myself,'' Tim Farmer said.

''Living in a mountain bike mecca like Rotorua, riding most days, and organising events, including the pinnacle of endurance racing, the 24-hour solo world champs, is amazing.''

The event will be held in California next year, before heading to Rotorua.
